Nara’s Ark

In 2016 Nara City, a member of the Culture City of East Asia program, held a series of cultural projects with the theme “from Japan’s ancient capital, Nara to all corners of Asia.” The contemporary art project Kotohogu Nara is a core part of the series that attempts to convey the overwhelming energy found in the power spots located throughout the city’s numerous cultural heritage sites.

Kotohogu literally translates as a ‘celebration of the ancient capital.’ Kotohogu Nara has a program comprised of contemporary forms of expression (such as art and theater) for both the people living in Nara and visitors from both inside and outside the country to experience.

The project offers the chance to delve into the ancient capital through contemporary art, discover what Nara’s has to offer for our future and the various challenges facing modern society, and attempt to create new values in the process.
